At Staynor Hall, we aim to inspire and challenge children through the encouragement of creativity. As pupils progress on their artistic journeys, they will be given opportunities to develop and extend their skills using a range of media and materials, taking inspiration from artists from around the world. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, 3d form, printmaking and collage and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.
Each child has a unique imagination and we strive to equip children with the confidence to explore and express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.
Art at Staynor Hall is taught linking both artistic skills to topic related subjects. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Art, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Art is taught as part of a termly topic, focusing on the knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.
At Staynor Hall we develop the following skills:
- Drawing (observational and practical)
- Painting
- 3D Form
- Printmaking
- CollageWhilst developing these skills, children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination and present their sense of vision through observation, experimentation and illustration. Art topics follow a ‘research-skills-final piece-evaluate’ structure, allowing pupils to focus on the development of their knowledge and skills along with becoming a confident art citic. Each child in Years 1-6 has a sketchbook to make initial sketches, develop skills, record ideas and develop opinions. We give the child ownership of their sketchbook in order to foster their sense of creativity and express their unique imagination.
By the end of their time at Staynor Hall, we want pupils to have learned, improved and embedded a range of artistic skills. This will be evidenced in the pupils’ individual sketchbook along with showcasing the development of their creativity over time. The children will have an awareness of a broad range of artists and be able to consider and discuss the artworks they come across. Our pupils will be confident to explore, experiment and take risks whilst valuing the process and creative journey they take. Most importantly, the children will have gained confidence in their self-expression and apply this to other areas of the curriculum.
