Our children develop an interest in learning Spanish language and the culture in an enjoyable and stimulating environment. We encourage children’s confidence and curiosity about language.
We aim to develop their awareness of cultural differences and similarities through an enriched and broad teaching of Spanish speaking countries, often linking our learning to the wider curriculum.
At Staynor Hall, we strive to progress the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to lay the foundations for future language learning.
Our children have a weekly lesson in Spanish and learn from nursery through to year six.
Our weekly Spanish lessons include development of pronunciation through Spanish phonic sounds. Vocabulary is introduced along with grammar rules which is then applied to conversions or writing skills. Children have fun, are encouraged and supported in their development of speaking and listening through games, singing, stories and conversations; which also help remembering words and phrases. As children progress through the year groups they record their learning in books and online learning platforms with pictures, sentences and the spoken word. Vocabulary banks are provided for all our children in KS2 as well as sentence builders to help with grammatical structures. In the classroom, wherever possible, simple instructions are given in Spanish to expose children to the language as much as possible. In addition to this, children are encouraged to speak Spanish around school on a day to day basis.
We measure the impact of the MFL curriculum in a variety of ways: Pupil Voice – which indicates that pupils are developing an understanding of the vocabulary and grammar in Spanish. They are developing skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, which can often show similarities in the English language.. Our children are able to identify their own strengths and areas for development through self assessment of their work.
Book and online learning platforms show that pupils have had opportunities for practice of skills from year one to year six. The skills they acquire enables confidence to support them to speak Spanish around school on a daily basis and stands them in a good position for their journey to high school.
