  • At Staynor Hall, we are passionate about ensuring our children gain the essential mathematical skills that they require for their future. Our mastery approach aims to create positive attitudes towards Maths and challenge by consistently providing the opportunity to explore and deepen their understanding. We want our children to be fluent mathematicians, who are confident to ask questions and can clearly reason with mathematical thinking. Our lessons are engaging, use real life context, where possible, and allow our pupils to be curious. We consistently give children the opportunity to practise skills by embedding maths across the wider curriculum.

  • The long term planning is developed from the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2, and from the Early Learning Goals for the Early Years. Teachers planning makes use of a range of other resources, including the NCETM Spines, the DFE Mathematics Guidance and White Rose Small Steps. These support teachers in developing carefully planned lessons that gradually develop concepts, forming a coherent journey.

In the Early Years, children have Maths carefully woven into their provision areas, as well as accessing whole class and group teaching.

Throughout school, equipment, pictorial and abstract representations are used to expose what is happening and deepen the children’s understanding. In lessons, children are frequently given the opportunity to explore a concept, develop fluency, reason mathematically and problem solve.

In lessons, children are seated to promote rich, mathematical discussion. Work, where possible, is live marked, allowing for misconceptions to be quickly identified. It is the aim for these misconceptions to be addressed before the next lesson.

Outside of the Maths lessons, basic skills are developed further in our ‘Big Maths’ short sessions. These are built on year by year throughout school so that children have a coherent journey.

  • At Staynor Hall, our children have a positive attitude towards their learning in Maths, which has been fostered in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Children demonstrate good perseverance and resilience in Maths and celebrate mistakes that lead to deeper understanding.

Children are regularly assessed, both pre and post teaching, to inform planning and possible intervention. In addition, children have individual targets that they are working on. These assessments, as well as children’s books, evidence children’s progress in Maths.

Parents and carers will have a good understanding of how they can help, support and celebrate maths at home.

TIMES TABLES POP SONGS

Below are videos designed to support the children’s learning of their time’s tables.

The tables are put to pop songs in order to help the children remember the time’s tables pattern.

These videos are aimed at KS2 children but we have found the younger children really enjoy them as well.

The links below are from an external site (YouTube) so at times adverts will pop up. Unfortunately, there is little we can do to prevent this.
